Traveling Thoughts

My last two days in Vietnam I spent in Hanoi . It gave me a day to visit and the second to arrive at the airport with plenty of time and tranquility. I booked a hostel in the old quarter where my host had suggested. It was a great recommendation, with many interesting places within walking distance. I woke up early, had breakfast at the hostel, and mapped out a few places nearby that I wanted to visit. My first stop was the Ngoc Son Temple, which is on a small island on a lake connected by a red wooden bridge. I walked around to take in the temple and its construction, as well as to enjoy the view of the city from the island. The next stop was a nice walk to Hoa Lo prison. I was hesitant when I added it to the map, but decided it had a lot of history and that I should visit. Meus últimos dois dias no Vietnã foram em Hanói . Tive um dia para passear e o segundo para chegar ao aeroporto com bastante tempo e tranquilidade. Reservei um albergue no bairro antigo, como minha anfitriã havia sugerido. Foi uma ótima recomendação, com muitos lugares interessantes a uma curta distância a pé. Acordei cedo, tomei café da manhã no albergue e tracei um roteiro com alguns lugares próximos que queria visitar. Minha primeira parada foi o Templo Ngoc Son, que fica em uma pequena ilha em um lago, conectada por uma ponte de madeira vermelha. Caminhei por lá para apreciar o templo e sua arquitetura, além de desfrutar da vista da cidade a partir da ilha. A próxima parada foi uma caminhada até a prisão de Hoa Lo. Hesitei um pouco antes de adicioná-la ao meu roteiro, mas decidi que tinha muita história e que valia a pena visitar. Vietnam had been high on my list for a long time. It was also one of the places where I hoped to volunteer. But it wasn’t where I imagined I would go after India. Since my path had been moving east, the plan was to stop in Thailand to visit friends, then continue on to Vietnam. It turned out both friends were out of the country during that period, so I changed course and moved Vietnam to the top of the list. I went back on my volunteer application and found an NGO called Catalyst for Change , which among other things works with a network of English teaching centers. Normally I prefer having things planned a bit earlier, but it turned out to be a good chance to practice staying calm when plans shift. In the end it worked out very well. The NGO has many centers in their network, and I found out near the end of the process that I would be going to a small village in the north of the country. O Vietnã estava no topo da minha lista há muito tempo. Era também um dos lugares onde eu esperava fazer trabalho voluntário. Mas não era para onde eu imaginava ir depois da Índia. Como meu caminho estava se movendo para o leste, o plano era parar na Tailândia para visitar amigos e depois seguir para o Vietnã. Acontece que meus dois amigos estavam fora do país durante esse período, então mudei de ideia e coloquei o Vietnã no topo da lista. Voltei ao site que uso para encontrar trabalho voluntário e encontrei uma ONG chamada Catalyst for Change , que, entre outras coisas, trabalha com uma rede de centros de ensino de inglês. Normalmente, prefiro planejar as coisas com um pouco de antecedência, mas acabou sendo uma boa oportunidade para praticar a calma quando os planos mudam. No final, tudo deu muito certo.
